The gift of time...

There have been times where I think I should update this blog but I feel like it would be so random.  I have had various events and activities take place since my last post but I haven't been able to squeeze the right words out at the right time...  It's busy!
It's Easter weekend and a time for reflection on the meaning of the historical events
surrounding the days.  Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday...
Gift of Life everlasting
and this weekend the gift of time...
I love the R&R of a long weekend and to make things truly fabulous - it is sunny and warm!
God is Good!

141 years - Just a baby.

Today is Canada Day which only became known as Canada Day in 1982 - It was called Dominion Day for many years because it was the day Canada celebrated the Anniversary of the formation of the Dominion of Canada on the 1st of July, 1868.
I love Canadian History but I forget so much from when I studied it. It is actually quite interesting to hear how we became such a blended and still peaceful nation.
When I have travelled internationally I have learned that we have such a short history compared to other nations.
When I was in Peru - they have this rich ancient history of the Incas living and thriving as a people group - it is amazing to walk through the ruins and imagine what lives they would have led.

And when I spend time in Northern Africa I could only imagine the long standing history in these tribal villages dating back to the times of the pharohs perhaps? It is not far from Egypt so who knows who walked the same dusty roads as we did?

And France has such a rich history of monarchy and scandal not to mention the architecture to the likes of nothing here in Canada - Our oldest building doesn't even come close to the structures that pepper the streets in Paris amidst a modern world.

So amazing - so wonderful!
But we are so young as a nation and as much as I like to think I live in an old character home built in the 1950's - I guess it is very modern compared to the homes and buildings I have visited from the 1700's and before!!
So cool.

Call in the Troops. - This yard ain't big enough for the both of us!

So yesterday I made the decision to take action!!!

When I was in Africa I had a mosquito net to cover my head, like a hood.  It is one of those ones that people use when they go camping....  I looked everywhere for it - couldn't find it.  Then I stumbled upon this mesh bag in the basement I use for my picnic dishes - I decided it would be my shield to protect me from the wasps.  It was firm yet I could still see through it and breath easily.

Then I had to get the right tools...  I stopped at Canadian Tire to pick up the spray that is used to get rid of the nests.  There was about 5 or 6 different kinds - I couldn't tell the difference.... They were all between $6-$12 so I went mid range and the prettiest can - Shiny purple!
It also made it sound Fast Acting - Jet Foam....  Sounded high tech to me....  Ring it in!
Then I had to finish suiting up - Notice the duct tape around my sleeves....  I didn't want to risk the little wizards finding their way into my shirt.  That just gives me the willies thinking about it!!!  They fly so fast and they come from no where - couldn't chance it!
I noticed the second layer of the nest was almost done (this was within 24 hours! that must be where the sentence busy bees comes from!!) so I had to act quickly before they put the call out for more tenants to move in to the newly renovated suites!

Every time I got close to aim the spray - I would freak out....  Something would swoosh by my face or I would feel something on my neck or some freak out behavior.  I have serious problems obviously!  I couldn't do it.
Mind over matter.

I just couldn't do it for the fear of retaliation.  These little critters get mad and they come for you with vengeance.  My mind was playing tricks on me and I became more and more spooked to deal with these stupid wasps.

So - I made a call on my very own Red Batman Phone - or as I like to call it - the Direct Dad Dial....
Called my dad and he came over to assist with the abatement and removal of these un-welcomed guests!  I had to laugh because he decided to  use the mesh bag over his head too!  Those things have no mercy when they come at you!  Freaky!  I stood at a distance with my hood up and ready to bolt back to shelter if there was any resistance and protest to the move.
Everything seemed to go according to plan.  The Jet Foam did it's job and nicely filled the void where the wasps lived and sent a message to the stragglers they weren't welcomed here any more!
Oh yes another funny part of the whole ordeal was when the rest of the wasp family started to return to their nest and they found a foam filled village.  There was no where for them to go.  Clearly, we were to blame for their misfortune and they were after us.  We had already started to let our guard down and take off the protective layers like a good hockey player in the dressing rooms - removing their pads that protected them during the game.  That was when they came for us!  My dad just starts randomly squirting the Jet Foam around the yard trying to plop some foam onto the wasps!  He hit one of them and it was dead on contact.  Not sure if it was suffocated from the foam or they were actually poisoned from the spray.
All in all - it turned out ok.  Safe and sound.
I am just hoping I don't have to deal with the squirrel.  I can't imagine the Jet Foam needed to remove that critter!

New condo development or squatters? Bad either way.

The international squatters' symbol
Did you know this is the international symbol for squatters??
I didn't.

Well let me tell you the latest news.  I have two new developments in my community that have invaded my property.
I am not sure what to do.  They have just moved in and taken up residence in their newly built homes.  One is actually more upsetting than the other.

1.  The squirrel.
I live in a neighborhood with big trees, shrubs and a large field.... Sort of like a giant urban forest. I have noticed more wild life hanging around.
Usually birds and wild rabbits but there is a new squirrel  that has been seen frequenting my yard.   It actually was just chilling out on my neighbors garage.  My dog freaks!!!

Not sure if it going to be a nuisance or if it is going to be like a friendly little Rocky - as long as Bullwinkle stays far away from my yard I think it will be ok.

2. The Condo....
I just planted some flowers in a window box I have that sits under my garage window.  The other day I was watering it when I noticed this attached to the bottom of the flower box.....
A wasp's nest!!!!!
What am I suppose to do???
I also noticed tonight they are already building a second layer - it is getting bigger.....
Look closely and you will see in the picture the are building a vestibule in the second layer.... an outside courtyard renovation taking place by these crazy wasps!!  Every time I would get close they would come shooting out kamikaze style at my face.  I had to cinch up to protect my head. Freaky!!!
So I need a plan.  I might start a petition and send it to the property developer - but that doesn't always work.  I might have to take action myself!!
I'll keep you updated!

Corks, Culture, and Coins.

I just returned from a little mini-holiday in San Francisco, California.  It was lovely there!  The people were friendly, the weather was spectacular and the city felt like a long lost friend.
I was in San Francisco a few years ago and I remember thinking this was a place I could spend a lot of time at and maybe even call home.  The culture and people were so warm and the great restaurants and wine bars reminded me of what I wish my city was like.  We have 2 maybe 3 great districts with great food and culture - it feels like San Francisco is designed with these great venues on every corner!
One evening I was laughing to myself because my friend and I wanted to find a Starbucks - we were shocked - there are very few around and the one we found on Ghirardelli square was closed at 8pm!!!!
However, they have TONS of these great cafe's that spill onto the streets.  The tables are full of locals and visitors sipping on great local wines from Northern California while enjoying the mid day sunshine or the warm evening air.

They might be sharing a plate of freshly made tapas or some wonderful late night snacks.  Most of their food is from local markets because they don't have to ship it in...  it is home grown!!  And because it is California they have an environmental concern on keeping things green and organic.  Very different than the frozen, then deep fried snacks we get here in Canada...

One part of any city that size is the homeless population and those in poverty.  I know - my city has many shelters that are forced to turn people away from their doors because there just aren't enough beds. In Canada, that is a big deal because of our harsh winters but in California their mild temperatures make those searching for a place to sleep less desperate.  The panhandlers come out in full force around the touristy areas, around Union Square because of all the shopping.  Their presence can be a bit overwhelming and awkward for people who don't know how to respond to the steady line up of sketchy characters standing around in certain areas asking for change.  Some of them develop little gimmicks that try to catch people's attention.  One guy was sitting under a box that he had designed to look like a monster.  He would talk from under the box to passers by and move the cut out lips of the cube shaped monster...  it caught my attention because he just starts talking in character.  There are so many of these various street people who have a little schtick they perform to get a few bucks from those who feel they need to respond with a donation.  I guess the one thing that makes the experience less assaulting is that they don't harass you for money - usually they just have an old MacDonald's cup with a few pennies or nickels in it that they shake at you as you walk by.
I thought I heard somewhere that there is a bylaw in California that says they cannot panhandle or ask for money directly or they can get a ticket or put in jail.
Not sure on exactly what the law says but I heard some people talking about it the first time I visited the city.
I also thought some of the panhandlers were funny because they had no gimmick...  one guy asked the couple walking near us for money to buy drugs.  I didn't know if I should laugh because I think he was serious.  Later I saw this guy and I had to take a picture.  I tried not to make it obvious so my friend is standing in the sight line but the focus is him and his sign.

If you can't read it - it says "Why lie, I want beer" - And I saw a few people slip him some cash just for his honesty.  I didn't know what to think...

Honestly, such a great trip.  I loved it - and after this trip I truly feel like I could live there.
So fun - if you haven't gone - GO!  it is amazing.... or you can come next year - I think it will become an annual trip...  so start saving your American $$$.   The more the merrier!

Tag? Don't judge me.

So, a few months ago a fellow Blogger put the challenge out to me or in the Internet chain letter format - she tagged me.  I am now required to write  7 random/weird facts about myself or I will have some sort of issue throughout my life - Just kidding - I don't think there is any sort of curse with waiting to expose these personal facts other than taint my image.  I am hoping it will be fun my readers won't think I am a freak!

I'll be honest this is tricky...  how do I pick which 7 of my quirks do I feel okay with sharing....

  1. I am a shoe freak -it's true.  One day I went to Canadian Tire to by a shelf to store all my shoes and they don't fit...  The shelf has 8 shelves and the shoes are doubled up (One on top of the other) on each shelf, some summer sandals and flip flips are piled 3 and 4 pairs high because they are flat.  Each shelf has approximately between 10 and 12 pairs on it.... Do the math.... The top shelf has boots because they are taller and don't fit in the shelf. PLUS, I have 2 boxes with other shoes that didn't make it onto the shelf.  All of this is kept secretly in the basement - that way people can't bug me when I say I need to buy new shoes.
  2. I like to garden.  Yes - it's true!  I like to grow my own vegetables and flowers.  My favorite is when I get to pick them and put them fresh into a salad and serve them to friends...  I love that feeling of "home made".
  3. I have to have my dishes and glasses stacked a certain way in the cupboard... It's not like I think the world will end if they are stacked differently but it makes me uneasy...  I have had friends over for dinner and after we are all done and doing dishes I will see them put a green bowl on top of an orange bowl...  my blood pressure jumps and I try to ignore it.  Once the coast is clear I re-arrange it a go on living peacefully.
  4. Everyday I walk my dog in an off leash park that is bordered by a residential alley.  This is where the garbage pick up is as well.  I am not a garbage picker but I saw a vintage floor lamp, circa 1950's siting in the alley behind someones house so I grabbed it and continued walking with my dog.  I carried it all the way through the park and got it home.  Not only was the light bulb left in it still working the lamp works just fine!
  5. So many people including Hailey, (the fellow blogger who has me exposing my weirdness to the world) love the TV show Gilmore Girls.  I don't get it.   I have never been interested in it.  The dialogue is way too over the top - no one actually talks like that - the script writers are clever but it is so rehearsed...  I think I have watched 3 episodes ever.  I can't have those hours back now. I know many people like it but I have never connected with it.
  6. I always secretly laughed and mocked those people who had "Dog Art".  Especially those velvet pictures of dogs sitting at a card table, wearing people clothes while the dogs drank, smoked and gambled.   Although it probably fit in well in their 1970 inspired "rumpus room" with avocado green shag rug and wood panelling.  I remember looking closely at these dogs and it was a fun picture - kinda kitschy!  But I always thought my art design taste was more contemporary with classic styling.  I am drawn to modern versions of classical design.  Well, last summer I was looking for something to hang in my front room.  Guess what I bought??
  7. Sometime after Survivor aired I became drawn into this world of reality television.  I think I have watched almost every reality TV show made!!!  The trashier the better!!!  Everything from Big Brother, the Bachelor, Paradise Hotel, The Apprentice, Average Joe, Beauty and Geeks, America's Next top Model, Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire and the list goes on.  I maybe don't watch the whole series but I like to see what they are about.  I don't like to admit it but I always wonder what I would be like on a Reality show.  I would apply for the Apprentice - it is one of my favorites!
Well, I guess that wasn't so bad.  Now you know some weird little facts about me.
Don't judge me!
